Purple Superfoods Smoothie Recipe

I'm the first to admit skepticism about the term "superfoods"—I think all whole foods (and pizza slices and cheeseburgers) are pretty super when you come right down to it. But I still can't resist a healthy and delicious smoothie packed with some of the most-touted superfoods, including blueberries, almonds, and raw cacao. The cacao gives this drink a satisfying depth of flavor that rests beneath all the purple berry goodness. Raw cacao is quite bitter, so do use the dates or substitute a sweetener of your choice to balance it out.


  • 1 1/2 cups frozen blueberries
  • 1 cup almond milk (homemade or purchased)
  • 2 Medjool dates, pitted
  • 1 tablespoon raw cacao nibs or powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract


  • Combine all ingredients in a blender and puree until perfectly smooth. Divide between two glasses and serve immediately.
